Google Yourself

Really, go now, Google yourself and see what you get. Okay, are you back yet?

I did this and according to them I am either a doctor, an actress, a student who lives in Oklahoma, or I work in staffing & recruiting in Ohio. The 5th link will take you to my Facebook page and the 7th is a link to Journey Churches where I get to lead and serve in the media ministry. And for those of you that don’t know me, no I’m not any of those things that first popped up. See my about me page if you really want to know who I am.

It kind of feels like an old television game show where they give you a bunch of clues and you have to figure out who the person really is. (I don’t remember the name, but if you do, please let me know in the comments.)

But it’s also something that if you are a leader, you should probably do on a regular basis. The internet is making the world smaller everyday, and because of that it has become easier for people to talk about you, publish information that may or may not be true, and also ruin your reputation if they so choose. No longer is it word of mouth, which used to just get around town – now it’s let me Google that person and see if I really want to do business with them, hang out with them, or be involved in any way, shape, or form. Just recently I posted about a bad experience with a company and while I don’t know the effect it’s had on anyone that read the post, it may cost them a customer or two, or a hundred. I know I personally don’t want to have someone write something like that about me. I endeavor to treat others fairly, to play well with others if you will, but there may be someone somewhere who doesn’t like something I say or do. And then they write about it. And if I don’t look, I don’t know that it’s out there, and then I can’t defend my reputation, apologize, or set the record straight.

So again I tell you, go Google yourself and see what you find. Is it you?
