Are you trying to do too much? It seems like lately we are all busier than we have ever been before. So many things demand our attention, that we end up doing most things half way and then say, well it’s good enough. As the holidays are fast approaching it adds even more to our all ready busy schedules. Kids Christmas parties and productions, special church services, office “holiday” parties, shopping, wrapping, shipping… you get the idea.
But what if we stopped doing too much. What if we stopped accepting “good enough” as the standard and we did fewer things with excellence. What if we actually used one of the hardest words to say (next to “I’m sorry”) – No.
For some reason, that I haven’t found a good explanation for, we have a hard time just saying No. We don’t say no to our kids and then they expect the world to revolve around them. We don’t say no to our boss and then they expect us to work all hours of the day and the world revolves around our job. We don’t say no to an addiction and it consumes us until it destroys everything else in our lives.
When will we realize that we are each created for a unique purpose and the more we take on the less we accomplish for what we are supposed to do. Just because we can doesn’t mean we should. Kem Meyer had a great post on this the other day that has stuck with me all week. And it reminded me that I have been guilty of this same thing, and it’s a hard habit to break. But starting now I am going to do what I am called to do, what I am passionate about, and lay some other things aside. So when I say no to you, please don’t take it the wrong way. Just understand that I can no longer do “too much”, because it is my goal to do what I am called to do with excellence, not just good enough.
